Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were responsible for a lot of bloodshed throughout Sri Lanka during 33 years of military aggression with a goal to create Tamil state in the north and east of the island. Until their ultimate defeat on May 16, 2009, LTTE militants killed thousands of people through suicide bombing which they are believed to be the pioneers of. LTTE suicide bombers included women and children.

These pictures are from the suicide attack conducted by an LTTE militant on October 6, 2008 in Sri Lankan city of Anuradhapura. The explosion killed at least 25 people, among which were the opposition leader of the North-Central provincial council – Major General Janaka Perera and his wife, the manager of the United National Party of Sri Lanka in Anuradhapura – Dr. John Pulle and his wife, several councilors of the United National Party and some other people.

The blast also injured more than 90 civilians and destroyed the office of the United National Party near the Old Bus Stand in Anuradhapura. Major General Janaka Perera was the most notable person killed in the attack, being the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council.

During the last few years of their offensive against the LTTE (Tamil Tigers), the Sri Lankan army committed many war crimes and crimes against humanity. Of course, Sri Lankan government denies any such allegations but more and more evidence surfaces to prove that things like summary executions of anyone Tamil, including civilians and systematic rape of Tamil women really took place.

It must be said, that even though Sri Lankan army clearly committed heinous crimes in their war against LTTE, the Tamil Tigers were not any less heinous in what they did. There was a lot of wrongdoing on behalf of both, but the army had an advantage of (at the time) international support because Tamil Tigers were considered a terrorist organization by many countries.

The unrest and tensions with ongoing killings and rapes on both sides lasted for over a quarter of century when Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa made a plea to eliminate the LTTE once and for all and to not stop until they’re done for. Massive military campaign was launched during which rapes documented in these photos took place.

The videos below are from a 4×4 rally held at Owitiyawatta in Kochchikade. According to the rally’s spokesperson, a jeep got stuck in a mud on a slope and needed an assistance of a recovery vehicle to get out of there. A towing rope the recovery vehicle used allegedly burst and in a rapid whip backlashed towards the crowd of onlookers who ignored the safety warnings and got too close.

The above is the official version of the story, though to me it looks like the mount ripped off the bumper, probably owing to poor bolting or welding jobs. With a chunk of metal attached to the end of the rope, it snapped back after high tension applied to it like a deadly projectile breaking skulls of two people.

A 20 year old youth died on the spot due to head injuries, another young man died due to the same later in hospital. Two more people were hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.

On November 27, 2007 female member of LTTE aka Tamil Tigers attempted to kill Sri Lankan Cabinet minister Douglas Devananda and it was caught on CCTV camera. The female suicide bomber who had explosives strapped to her bra is seen in the video speaking with the cabinet minister before getting up and reaching into her bra to set the bomb off.

Douglas Devananda who was Sri Lanka’s Minister for Social Welfare and a leader of the EPDP at the time was not harmed, rendering the mission of the suicide bomber unsuccessful. The woman suffered from polio and used it to her advantage as owing to her visible disability, the security guards did not perform thorough body check. Aside from the woman, one security guard was mortally wounded by the blast and succumbed to his injuries later in a hospital.

Manthrie Dewage Karunawathi is a 59 year old woman from Galewela in Sri Lanka. In local dialect, the meaning of Karunawathi is “The Compassionate Woman”. Manthrie Dewage Karunawathi suffers from rare type of flesh eating disease which ate half of her face away down to the bone. Not even the nigh indestructible eye survived the invasion of Necrotising Fasciitis.

The disease also deprived the woman of her left ear and lips. The former greatly limits her ability to hear, while the latter exposes her teeth giving the poor woman an unpleasant, zombie like appearance. Some people called her the real life two face.

Manthrie Dewage Karunawathi became a widow in 2008, however at that time she was still a healthy woman who was able to retain her job in a quarry which earned her enough for food and schooling for the only son she had with her husband. Then on September 28, 2010 her face started to fall apart and with it her life.

Coming from a poor neighborhood in an impoverished country, Manthrie Dewage Karunawathi could not afford to seek professional treatment for her worsening condition. And the conditioned kept getting worse and worse by the day. Once healthy woman became a freak of nature within a span of months.

Luckily, she was noticed by foreigners visiting Sri Lanka who took pictures and filmed videos of the woman and passed it around the interweb along with banking info for people to send donations to. While nothing could bring her affected side of the face back after all muscle tissue has been eaten away, near half a dozen surgeries stopped the spread of the disease and replaced missing facial tissue with skin grafts from other parts of body. The Karunawathi Needs Your Help website is currently inaccessible due to overusage of bandwidth, but that’s where her road to recovery started.

A group of four men armed with machetes hacked a motorcyclist on a busy road in the city of Galle, Sri Lanka. The attack took place in broad daylight, in full view of dozens of onlookers. The victim was left with hands and feet chopped off and bled out in the street. He died on the way to a hospital.

The victim has been identified as a 48 year old Saman Kumara Seneviratne. He was a businessman in Galle and reportedly a close relative of a member of Galle Municipal Council. The attack was reportedly carried out by henchmen of a rival drug cartel, which would imply that Saman Kumara Seneviratne was involved with drug trafficking himself. As a drug trafficker, he really doesn’t have a leg to stand on…

The accident happened at the Periyamulla traffic lights in the city of Negombo in Sri Lanka. The daughter took her mother by motorcycle to the city to buy medication she needed. Traffic was heavy and someone driving a car behind them decided to force his way forward after the use of foul language did not grant him a corridor through overcrowded street.

The idiot driver knocked mother and daughter off the motorcycle and drove over mother’s neck, decapitated her on the spot. Devastated daughter picked her mother’s severed head up and begged onlookers to help her. There wasn’t anything anyone could do to save her mother’s life, but it’s understandable that such sudden and violent death of her parent put her in a state of severe distress and asking for help to bring her mother back was about the only thing she could think of doing.

The daughter was interviewed after the incident by a local news channel and said that: “Everyone was videotaping but no one tried to help ” – it’s the world we live in. Ignorance has taken over our lives and people look for opportunities to brag on Facebook about rather than help. As a non Facebook sheep, I noticed that during my trip around the world – I went to see the sunset, Facebook sheep went to take pictures of the sunset so they can post it on Facebook for everyone to tell them how they envied them being in a foreign country. Recent photos leaked from Sri Lanka show 12 year old Balachandran Prabhakaran, son of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran who was also killed at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war show the boy enjoying a snack in a sandbag bunker and then the boy dead with bullet wounds in his body. According to an analysis by an expert with Channel 4, both before and after photos were taken with the same camera.

The photos were released on February 19, 2013 as part of the new evidence announcing the upcoming feature documentary “No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka”. The documentary makers allege that Balachandran Prabhakaran, who appears to have been shot 5 times in the chest was executed by Sri Lankan army because his father was a Tamil Tiger leader.

Film director Callum Macrae said these events were photographed to be kept by the army as trophies. The documentary is scheduled to be screened at the Geneva Human Rights Film Festival at UN Human Rights Council meeting in March, 2013.

Even if Sri Lankan government is proven to have violated human rights during the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, UN Human Rights Council would be hypocritical if they prosecuted them, but would not prosecute war criminal Barack Hussein Obama. On May 24, 2013 a Buddhist monk identified as Venerable Bowatte Indraratana Thera set himself on fire in front of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka reportedly in protest of slaughter of cattle. The monk poured gasoline over his body and somebody (a helper?) struck a match. The monk was taken to a hospital in Kandy and later transferred to General Hospital in Colombo where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
